ABOUT AEK

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General Questions

No. We are a manufacturer of cabinets and storage solutions. Epinephrine, being a prescription medication, has to be purchased with a prescription or standing order from a medical doctor.

It is actually pretty straight-forward. In most states, you just need to contact your school's physician or a doctor in your community (preferably an allergist, but any doctor will do) and ask them to write you a prescription to the school itself - not to a person. This is called a "stock epinephrine" or "undesignated epinephrine" prescription. Once you have your prescription you can order EpiPens or Auvi-Qs from most school nurse supply catalogs, medical suppliers or directly from a program called EpiPen4Schools (BioRidge Pharma) that offers free EpiPens for schools for each building - and additional auto-injectors at a deep discount.

For some schools, just telling them that the product exists will get the ball rolling. In other cases, you will need to become an advocate for the allergic children in your school by introducing the Public Area Epinephrine Cabinet concept at a School Board Meeting. The similarity to AEDs, combined with resources such as the EpiPen4Schools program for free and discounted auto-injectors, can make for a compelling conversation. School PTA organizations have been known to donate AEDs and may similarly support purchase of Original Allergy Emergency Kit cabinets.

Yes, our cabinets work with every auto-injector on the market. Better yet, our cabinets work with anything that you can stick a piece of self-adhesive Velcro to! Our cabinets come with the Velcro pieces so you can get up and running very quickly.

If you purchase one Original Allergy Emergency Kit cabinet and apply to the EpiPen4Schools program through BioRidge Pharma, you can get your public area epinephrine strategy launched for a little over $300.

  • Since Epinephrine is a prescription-only drug, it must be kept secure from accidental use and theft. Our patent-pending design prevents access by children and requires anyone without a key to break the window to take out the epinephrine.
  • Unlike opening a door or setting off a siren, breaking the window is a clear Criminal Damage to Property incident - which is why fire hoses and extinguishers were secured this way for decades.
  • Don't worry - it's not real glass - it is a proprietary material that breaks into non-lethal chunks and is easy to clean after an emergency incident.
  • An alarm is also available as a customization option.

The Allergy Emergency Kit comes with instruction sheets for two of the most popular types of auto-injector: the EpiPen and the Auvi-Q. These sheets fit into the pocket behind the velcro panel and display clear instructions on how to administer medication. Always call 911 in case of an anaphylactic emergency.

WHAT NOT TO DO

Don't install the cabinet somewhere that could remain locked up while the rest of the building is open.

The most basic function of an Allergy Emergency Kit cabinet is that it is supposed to be available for emergencies 24/7/365 - whenever the building is in use. Make sure you have at least one cabinet that is always accessible even when the building is minimally in-use.

Don't forget to use the Velcro! The view through the window tells you what's inside.

The Allergy Emergency Kit was designed to not need shelves - it is not a shelving unit. The design of the AEK is meant to permanently support all brands and designs of auto-injector, past, present and future. Make sure when you are looking through the glass you can see everything that is in the cabinet. That is why we ship our hallway/lunchroom epinephrine cabinets with strip velcro (for Benadryl) and velcro coins (for auto injectors).

Don't use panel-style bags with loose auto-injectors or inhalers.

The AEK flat panel evacuation bags are designed to be compatible with the 16-Unit, 32-Unit, and 20-Unit Inhaler nurse's office storage products. The back panel of the cabinets is removable and fits inside the bag. The panel storage products can be placed directly in the panel-style evacuation bag in case of emergency.

For loose auto-injectors we recommend the field trip bag (pictured), which includes a velcro panel of its own, or other specialty bags, such as the athletic coach insulated bag or field trip fanny pack.
